Images of parents attempting to hand over their children to soldiers have become a defining picture of the chaotic end to the West's involvement in Afghanistan, Metro UK reported.

He said the people should not be deceived by fake rumours about travelling abroad and asked them to avoid coming to the airport, Afghan media reported.

Witnesses reported seeing the bloodied bodies lying on the ground just outside the terminal building, according to the report.

"All commercial flights are suspended at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, a statement reads. The statement calls on the people to avoid crowds at the airport," TOLO News said in a Tweet.

"The crowd was out of control. The firing was only done to defuse the chaos," the official was quoted as saying.
