Xinhua news agency reports that wildfires ignited on August 8, sweeping through Lahaina in Maui and leaving the oceanside historic town in ruins.

The Governor stated that approximately 38% of the scorched area has been surveyed, with roughly 2,200 structures in Maui—86% of which are residential—either completely destroyed or damaged.

According to the latest update from Maui County, at least 53 people have died because of the wildfires.

Strong winds from Hurricane Dora were to blame for the deadly wildfires, leaving parts of Lahaina, a tourist spot, destroyed.
