The 30-share BSE index was trading 404.42 points or 1 per cent higher at 40,948.79, and the broader NSE Nifty rose 113.55 points or 0.95 per cent to 12,010.35.

HCL Tech was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, surging around 3 per cent, followed by L&T, M&M, Tech Mahindra, Maruti, TCS, Asian Paints, Infosys and HDFC Bank.

ICICI Bank was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, jumping over 5 per cent, followed by Axis Bank, Nestle India, SBI, HDFC, ONGC and Kotak Bank.

Tata Steel topped the Sensex gainers chart with a jump of 5.38 per cent, followed by HDFC Bank, PowerGrid, Ultratech Cement, Kotak Bank, Axis Bank and ONGC

On the Sensex chart, IndusInd Bank, Tata Steel, Infosys, ONGC, Kotak Bank, NTPC and Bharti Airtel were among prominent gainers.

Tech Mahindra was the top loser in the Sensex pack, shedding around 2 per cent, followed by HCL Tech, TCS, ICICI Bank, Bajaj Finance and ITC.

Exchange data showed that foreign institutional investors bought equities worth Rs 615.17 crore on a net basis on Monday.

"Going ahead, market is expected to remain positive but with sector/stock specific action. Investors would now track earnings season and watch out for management commentaries."
