In early trading, the BSE Sensex rose by 270.18 points to reach 72,740.48, while the NSE Nifty increased by 87.35 points, reaching 22,092.05.

On Tuesday, the rupee had recovered from its all-time low levels and settled higher by 14 paise at 82.99 against the US dollar.

The 30-share BSE Sensex declined 115.41 points to 65,424.01. The NSE Nifty slipped 41.35 points to 19,423.65.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 83.10, then touched a high of 82.99 against the American currency, registering a rise of 9 paise over its last close.

The movement of the rupee against the dollar and global oil benchmark Brent crude would also influence trading in the equity market.

Caution also prevailed in the markets ahead of the major events -- RBI's monetary policy and the US inflation data -- due to be announced on Thursday.

The 30-share BSE Sensex fell 299.99 points to 65,482.79. The NSE Nifty declined 87.5 points to 19,439.05.

Indices are expected to stay in the positive territory after the US Federal Reserve's move on interest rate hike came in on expected lines, traders said.

Decline in share prices of market bluechip firms Reliance Industries and Tata Consultancy Services also added to the bearish trend in equities.

The NSE Nifty climbed 128.95 points to reach its lifetime high of 19,318.
