Officials of the Polavaram Project Authority and Central Water Commission toured Kothagudem district to assess the impact of backwaters amid uncertainty over the extent of land submergence in Telangana.

Officials review key components including the diaphragm wall and cofferdams, stressing expedited work and coordination between Central and State agencies

Officials from these states argue that the project- designed to harness the Godavari water- would be causing severe submergence issues, affecting villages and farmlands in bordering areas.

Now that the Polavaram project has come up downstream, the backwater effect is adding more to the grave threat.

There is mounting evidence of abnormal occurrences such as flash floods in the Godavari basin too.
