A gravity-based, zero-energy water purifier developed by CSIR-NEERI is providing relief in flood-hit Assam’s Jorhat district, where potable water is scarce. Nearly 25 percent of schools are dependent on underground water, which is prone to contamination with pollutants like arsenic, fluoride, rust and bacteria, that could potentially affect children’s health.

As per the mid-day meal scheme social audit for 2024, only 27.2 percent of the schools have access to RO water, while 43.8 percent use tap water.

He said that Telangana was spending Rs 45,000 crore on this project, whereas the Centre will be spending around Rs 3.60 lakh crore and hopes to complete the nationwide project by 2024.
