Hyderabad: The Covid-led lockdown has forced many of us to stay at home and engage ourselves with the available resources. If spending time with family was one part of the activity, many also found themselves gaining knowledge and keep themselves entertained with virtual assistants like Amazon Alexa.

According to a recent study, requesting for songs, movie dialogues and getting information on Covid, health, and wellness were some of the top requests to Alexa in 2021.

Between March to April last year when the pandemic was going through its second wave, customers asked 11,500 questions every day about Covid, health and wellness-related topic to Alexa. Not just this, customers in India were entertained by Alexa by playing more than 21.6 lakh songs every day with genres like kids, devotional, and regional languages featuring prominently in top 20 songs.

The report also mentions that the Alexa smart home selection increased by 72 per cent year-on-year with new products from brands like Xiaomi, OnePlus, Hindware, and Atomberg.

“The interaction with Alexa has increased by 68 per cent more in 2021 compared to 2020 with almost 50 per cent of customers coming from non-metro cities. The virtual assistant also answered over 1.7 lakh questions every day on different topics. Customers also loved starting and ending their days with Alexa as they wished Alexa, good morning and good night 11,520 times every day,” the report says.

In 2021, with a move to neural speech recognition technology, Alexa became more accurate in understanding user queries and reduced Automatic Speech Recognition errors by 25 per cent.
