Hyderabad: The 1980s AI photo trend, which has gone viral in last few days, has now caught the attention of cyber fraudsters, who are reportedly using the craze to circulate fake photo editing apps and malicious APK files on social media platforms.

The trend has recently gained widespread popularity, with users including actors, celebrities and politicians joining the trend by turning their photographs into vintage-style 1980s portraits using AI tools.

However, the sudden surge in interest has also increased searches for AI photo-editing tools and related apps.

Cybercriminals are allegedly exploiting this demand by promoting fake apps under names associated with the 1980s AI trend. Links to APK files are being circulated through social media posts, messaging platforms and third-party websites, making them appear like genuine photo editing applications.

Cybercrime authorities warn that installing apps from unverified sources can expose users to malware and allow attackers to access sensitive information stored on their phones.

“Personal photographs, contacts and other private data could be at risk if users grant unnecessary permissions to suspicious applications,” said a senior Cybercrime official.

Users have been advised to download applications only from official app stores or verified sources and avoid APK files shared through unknown links. “They (users) should also carefully check an app’s developer, permissions, and source before installation,” the official said.

With the 1980s AI trend continuing to spread online, cyber officials have urged users to be cautious and not compromise phone security in the rush to join a viral trend.
