Adilabad: Two persons were booked for allegedly abusing traffic police and deterring them from discharging their duties during a vehicle check, here on Saturday. Adilabad I Town Sub-Inspector G Appa Rao said that the accused persons were Shaik Fareed and his friend Shaik Maqbool of Shanthinagar of the town.

Fareed and Maqbool picked up an argument with Traffic policemen for asking to show documents of the motorbike on which they were traveling. In the meantime, Maqbool abused the policemen using filthy language. He, in a fit of rage, set the vehicle on fire to divert the issue and to gain sympathy from onlookers. Based on a complaint received from Traffic Sub-Inspector Shaik Abdul Baqi, a case was registered against the two under Section 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 435 read with 109 (Mischief by fire or explosive substance) of the Indian Penal Code. Investigations were taken up.

Earlier, the visuals of Maqbool torching the two-wheeler and the news went viral on social media platforms. Users of WhatsApp and Facebook expressed solidarity with Maqbool. They criticised traffic cops for imposing fines. The incident became a talk of the time. It is learnt that the owner of the bike is a tribal and penalties worth Rs 1,200 were pending for violation of traffic norms. “The accused were already detained by police. They confessed to committing the crime and apologized to traffic police,” a police source said.
