24,192 minor irrigation tanks overflowing in Telangana
According to a report from the irrigation wing of the Chief Minister’s Office, as many as 6,993 tanks under the jurisdiction of Superintending Engineer of Sangareddy were overflowing and at least 1,277 tanks reached their maximum capacity

Hyderabad: More than 50 per cent of the minor irrigation tanks in the State, both in Krishna and Godavari river basins, have been overflowing following copious inflows in the wake of heavy rains in the State in the past few days. At least 24,192 of the 43,412 tanks are overflowing indicating saturation of ground water in these areas. While Sangareddy and Mahabubnagar top the list under Krishna basin, Warangal and Nirmal registered maximum number of overflowing tanks under Godavari basin.
According to a report from the irrigation wing of the Chief Minister’s Office, as many as 6,993 tanks under the jurisdiction of Superintending Engineer of Sangareddy were overflowing and at least 1,277 tanks reached their maximum capacity.
In Rangareddy, as many as 1,997 were overflowing and 735 were full up to 100 per cent. Nalgonda which has 4,454 tanks has 1,266 overflowing and 1,124 reached their maximum capacity. Mahabubnagar which has 6,419 tanks has 4,644 overflowing and 630 reached 100 per cent capacity.
On the Godavari basin, under SE Nirmal area 718 tanks were overflowing and 1,694 reached their full capacity. In Karimnagar out of 4,290 tanks, 2,578 tanks were overflowing and 1,063 were up to the brim. Khammam with 3,883 tanks has 2,795 overflowing, and 1,044 tanks reached 100 per cent capacity. Nizamabad which has 3,206 tanks has 992 overflowing and 1,518 tanks reached 100 per cent capacity. Warangal with 6,030 tanks has 2,209 overflowing, and 2,887 tanks reached full capacity.
Breaches
There were also breaches reported in several areas due to heavy rainfall, flooding of rivulets and seasonal streams that have brought extremely heavy inflows into these minor irrigation tanks with generally have less holding capacity. There were 318 breaches in tanks under Krishna and 343 breaches to tanks under Godavari basin. As per the Superintending Engineers of these the district’s 188 tanks were breached in Sangareddy, 31 in Rangareddy, 28 in Nalgonda, and 71 in Mahbubnagar. Similarly 42 tanks were breached in Nirmal, 46 in Karimnagar, 29 in Khammam, 38 in Nizamabad, and 188 in Warangal.
