Hyderabad: Orthopaedic surgeons at SLG Hospitals on Sunday said they have treated a giant cell benign tumour from the patella (knee cap) region near the knee joint of a 30-year-old woman, who was admitted with severe knee pain.
Clinical assessment revealed that the woman had a giant cell tumour (non-malignant) in the patella region. The surgical procedure was performed three months ago, and the patient was being observed for possibilities of a recurrence ever since. The patient is now doing fine and has returned to regular daily routine, doctors said.
Dr. Jagan Mohan Reddy V, Orthopedic Surgeon, SLG Hospitals who treated the patient said, said that a tumour in the patella region was quite rare. “There were limited references in medical literature for this medical condition. The patient being a young housewife, there was a need to ensure post-surgery, she could lead an active life ahead. We managed to treat the tumour and fill the space to ensure there is no reccurrence,” he said.
