Hyderabad: What was meant to be a celebration to ring in the New Year, turned out to be a worst nightmare for girl students of a prominent engineering college in Medchal district.
Following the DJ musical night organised by the hostel management on the intervening night of December 31 and January 1, a girl student who went to use the washroom on the ground floor of the college hostel – II was in for a shock as she found a mobile camera on the ventilator.
This sparked outrage and protests by students on the college campus. Students alleged that around 300 private videos were secretly recorded in the girls washroom over the last three months. They suspect involvement of hostel workers.
According to a complaint registered with the Medchal police, after observing a mobile camera on the ventilator, the student immediately informed the hostel warden who allegedly did not take any action. As a large number of students questioned the warden an action was initiated, the student said.
The student said evidence was allegedly removed from the scene and there was neither proper management nor supervision of the hostels.
Men were roaming in the hostel premises during night time and there was no proper security, the student said, adding that there were no proper barriers between hostels and hostel workers’ residences.
Despite raising these issues with college management no action was initiated, the student said and wanted the police to initiate strict action against those who recorded videos of girls in the washrooms.
Meanwhile, the police took into custody five persons who work in the college and seized their mobile phones. The police are checking the phones. So far, the police did not confirm students’ allegations that some persons secretly recorded 300 videos of girl students in the washroom.
