Hyderabad: Given its nutritional values and benefits, Telangana Foods’ Balamrutham is being continuously supplied to different districts of Andhra Pradesh.
Balamrutham is the weaning food introduced under Integrated Child Development Service (ICDS) to provide improved supplementary nutrition to children between 7 months to 3 years. The weaning food is a preparation of wheat, chana dal, milk powder, oil and sugar and provides 50 per cent of much-needed iron, calcium, vitamins and other recommended dietary allowance that children require per day.
Every month, Telangana Foods supplies about 4,000 tonnes of Balamrutham to different districts in Andhra Pradesh. Save for a couple of years during State bifurcation, supply has been continuing regularly since then, said a senior official from Telangana Foods. Even for the current financial year, the Andhra Pradesh government has placed its indent for the supply of 4,000 tonnes a month. It is supplied to 257 ICDS centres in 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh, the official said.
Considering its benefits, Telangana Foods ensured regular supply even during lockdown imposed due to the Covid pandemic last year. In fact, Telangana Foods is now hiring a new transport agency to supply Balamrutham to different districts in Andhra Pradesh, the official further explained. In Telangana, Women Development and Child Welfare Department supplies around 2,500 tonnes of Balamrutham every month. This quantity is supplied to over 15 lakh beneficiaries through different ICDS centres in the State, the official informed.
Given the demand, Telangana Foods is now working to increase the production capacity of its plant at Nacharam in the city. At present, the plant produces nearly 200 tonnes a day and a second plant is being set up with a production capacity of 100 tonnes a day on the existing plant premises. “There are few technical issues and they will be sorted soon. Hopefully, by next year operations will commence at the new plant,” the official added.
