Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has demolished over 65 old and dilapidated structures across the city since last week. In the wake of forecast of heavy rains, the municipal corporation has also intensified efforts to shift residents residing in such structures to safer locations.

Before the onset of monsoon season, as part of its annual exercise the GHMC conducted a survey and had identified 545 dilapidated structures in all municipal circles. In the present monsoon season, close to 187 structures were demolished while 127 structures were repaired by the residents or vacated.

In the last one week, 65 dilapidated structures have been demolished and 140 residents living in 33 dilapidated structures have been vacated, said GHMC Commissioner DS Lokesh Kumar.

The special drive for demolition of dilapidated structures will be continued during the next few days. This apart, directions have been issued to the engineering wing to submit a report on structural stability of different structures.

In case of dangerous structures, precautionary measures are being taken such as vacating residents, sealing the building, barricading around the structure and displaying notice boards cautioning public not to move around the structure. The municipal corporation has also appealed to citizens living in dilapidated structures to vacate the building voluntarily and has urged public to alert authorities about dilapidated structures in their neighbourhood.

C&D waste clearance

In addition to spraying of disinfectants and bleaching powder in affected colonies, GHMC is also clearing construction and demolition debris from different areas across the city. The municipal corporation officials inspected over 204 main road stretches and identified C&D waste at 190 locations out of which the waste has been cleared in 68 locations.
