Hyderabad: A 65-year-old overhead water tank in SR Nagar was demolished on Wednesday after it became structurally weak and was seen as a serious threat of collapse during heavy rains and strong winds.

The demolition followed the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) acting on a report by JNTU-H engineering experts, who examined the structure and said it should not be used due to structural weakness.

The HMWSSB in a press release said the overhead water tank was in a dilapidated condition and remained unused for the past 15 years. It decided to demolish it and sought Hydraa’s help for a safe demolition.

The overhead water tank was 65 years old and had a capacity of 10 lakh litres to supply water to thousands of families in SR Nagar. Built at a height of 80 metres to supply water under pressure, it met drinking water needs but became weak over time.

The demolition took place in an area surrounded by houses and offices at 6 am and iron ropes were secured and two tall Hitachis were used. Due to the hazardous nature, the demolition was carried out cautiously and completed by 10 am.
