Warangal Urban: About 70 tolas of gold including ornaments were stolen from a jewellery-making workshop under Matwada police station limits in Warangal city.
Though the incident happened on Friday (November 20), the owner of the workshop, Dipankar Chakraborthy, lodged a complaint with the police on Sunday night (November 22) prompting the police to register a case.
Speaking to mediapersons here on Monday, Matwada Inspector Ganesh said that Dipankar, a native of West Bengal, hired two goldsmiths from West Bengal to make the jewellery and sell the same to local jewellery shops. “But the workers left the place without informing him. Since the workshop was not open for two days. Dipankar broke open the shutters of the workshop, and to his shock, the gold and gold ornaments were missing from the safe,” he said.
“Following this, Dipankar tried to locate the workers with the help of their relatives, but to no avail,” the Inspector said, addiing that the police suspect the goldsmiths may have decamped with the gold. “Two special teams have been formed to nab the accused,” he added.
Dipankar has been into jewellery-making business for more than five years in Warangal. The Central Zone DCP is overseeing the investigation since it is a major case of theft.
