Hyderabad: This towering banyan tree in Rajanna Sircilla district will be where future generations will sit in the shade, and tell stories how the tree almost died but was revived and stood up to live again.
The 70-year-old tree had almost seen its end four months ago, when heavy downpours that went on for days on the outskirts of Suddala village in Konaraopet of Sircilla brought it down. Soon after the rains, the tree also began drying up, lying in the same spot in the agriculture land owned by Burra Bhumaiah Goud and Burra Ramesh Goud. That was when Dr Dobbala Prakash, a nature lover from the same village saw it.
He ensured that the land owners, especially Ramesh, watered the tree as he began making attempts to get experts to relocate the tree. The efforts of Ramesh, watering the tree for two months, bore results and the tree started sprouting new leaves and new roots. Prakash, meanwhile, got the local media to write about the tree, with the reports then catching the eye of Rajya Sabha MP J Santosh Kumar, the founder of the Green India Challenge.
The MP then got Vata Foundation to prepare the tree for relocation, and on Sunday, two huge cranes lifted the protagonist of the story, the banyan tree after cutting off a few branches and using a special road and efforts spanning nearly three hours, shifted the tree to the District Collectorate. Two large branches from the mother tree were also planted in the Zillella forest area in Tangannapalli mandal.
Santosh Kumar said the entire process was possible due to blessings from Minister KT Rama Rao and also thanked Prakash for his efforts to revive the tree.
