Hyderabad: A total of 873 persons were caught for drunk driving as part of the special drives across the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate during the New Year celebrations. Officials said it was an incident and accident free celebration this year.

To prevent road accidents and other untoward incidents on the New Year eve, hundreds of teams of Cyberabad Traffic Police conducted drunk driving tests and cases were booked against those caught for driving under the influence of alcohol.

“All of them will be produced before the court in due course of time after filing chargesheets. Also, their driving licences will be seized and sent to the Regional Transport Authorities concerned for suspension as per the MV Act,” said S M Vijay Kumar, DCP (Traffic) Cyberabad.

Of those caught, nearly 490 persons had alcohol reading more than 100 mg/100 ml of BAC and 37 had more than 300 mg and eight persons had more than 500 mg reading. Most of the cases were reported from Kukatpally, Gachibowli, Madhapur and Miyapur areas.

“With extensive enforcement and traffic and road safety plans by the police, this year there were no major road accidents anywhere in Cyberabad. In view of the long weekend, focus on drunk driving will continue as part of our ‘Zero Tolerance’ policy towards drunk driving,” Vijay Kumar said.
