Hyderabad: Ten years after its commercial launch on September 5, 2016, Reliance Jio’s subscriber base across the unified Telangana–Andhra Pradesh telecom circle has grown from zero to 325.8 lakh – a 39.9% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) that outpaced every rival in the market by a wide margin.
Over the last decade, the regional market has transitioned from extreme digital scarcity to a playground of digital abundance. Around 2016, Indians rationed mobile data as if it were a scarce physical commodity. The average monthly mobile data consumption was below 0.2 GB (200 MB) per subscriber and a single gigabyte of data cost around Rs 228. Fewer than 10 million Indians had access to 4G networks with average download speeds struggling to cross a meagre 2.5 Mbps.
However, Jio’s entry changed the scenario by treating high-speed bandwidth as a fundamental public utility rather than a luxury. Today, in 2026, the cost of a gigabyte of data has plummeted by approximately 97 percent to roughly Rs.7.9. Active high-speed 4G and 5G subscribers have climbed to around 938 million. On Jio’s network, an average subscriber now consumes 42.3 GB every month.
In these ten years, in terms of market share, Jio’s base multiplied roughly 26.3 times and as of June 2026, Reliance Jio stands as the dominant No. 2 operator in the AP Circle, with 36.9 percent of the region’s total 883.0 lakh wireless connections.
Launched in late 2016, Jio achieved its first milestone on the monthly subscriber tables in 2019 overtaking Vodafone Idea and subsequently Bharti Airtel, briefly climbing to the top position in the AP Circle. While Bharti Airtel reclaimed the leading position later, Jio maintained its stronghold at No. 2.
Unlike 4G technology adoption, with 5G, Jio closed the global gap by launching its commercial 5G services in late 2022 while the commercial deployments began worldwide around 2019. The 5G rollout was unprecedented, completing nationwide coverage in 15 months, and accumulating a massive base of approximately 268 million 5G customers within 42 months.
Jio designed and developed its own end-to-end, cloud-native standalone 5G architecture, which include its own core network, operational and business support systems (OSS/BSS), and advanced radio systems.
Jio’s engineers designed integrated macro base stations, indoor and outdoor small cells, and compact private-network solutions tailored to the unique terrain and economics of the Indian subcontinent. Jio currently employs 11,303 people exclusively in research and technology development, representing roughly 40 percent of its total workforce.
This R&D powerhouse has successfully filed 6,817 patents spanning 4G, 5G, next-generation 6G, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing. India is no longer merely adopting global standards, but its involvement in international 6G standard-setting efforts ensures the country will help write them.
Jio also came up with the JioBharat device — a low-cost feature phone in form factor packed with physical keys, long battery life, and regional-language support, but powered with modern digital essentials, including UPI payments, HD voice, a digital camera, and streaming media services.
A similar paradigm shift is underway in fixed broadband. Jio’s Unlicensed Band Radio (UBR) fixed-wireless technology bypasses physical limitations, deploying high-speed broadband wirelessly over the air.
By March 31, 2026, Jio’s home broadband customer base crossed 27 million and the base is now roughly 1.9 times the size of its closest competitor. This broadband foundation supports services ranging from high-definition television and cloud gaming to smart-home IoT devices.
Across India, Jio now serves 524.4 million active customers.
