Hyderabad: Ever since it got released, Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri’s directorial, ‘The Kashmir Files’, has been creating a buzz and records of sorts. Moviegoers can’t seem to get enough of this hard-hitting and brutally honest depiction of the exodus of the Kashmiri Pandits in 1989-90.
The movie isn’t just making its presence felt at the box-office, but also went on to create a record in terms of its ratings too, especially on IMDb whose ratings are measured by the votes cast by registered users. The platform is considered the best yardstick to measure a film’s worth as the ratings are based not only on the perspective of the critics and reviewers, but also takes the audience reviews into account.
So, when ‘The Kashmir Files’ had a rating of 9.9/10 on IMDb, it was a certainly a moment worth celebrating for the film’s team as well as the wider audience in India.
But the movie saw a sudden dip in its ratings, which went down to 8.3. While director Agnihotri is extremely unhappy with this and terms the change “unusual and unethical”, IMDb has its own explanation to it. A note on the IMDb website says: “Our rating mechanism has detected unusual voting activity on this title. To preserve the reliability of our rating system, an alternate weighting calculation has been applied.” This seemingly insufficient and vague explanation didn’t go down well with Indian moviegoers.
So far, 521,316 IMDb users have given their verdict on ‘The Kashmir Files’ by casting a weighted average vote, which currently stands at 8.3 / 10. Now, we have to wait and watch what would come out of the controversy the dip in the ratings has stirred up!
