Hyderabad: A 71-year-old man Syed Ishaque, who donated a part of his liver to his elder brother for live liver transplantation 22 years ago, underwent multiple heart bypass surgeries, which were conducted by a team of cardiologists led by Director, Cardiac Surgery, Care Hospitals, Banjara Hills, Dr. Prateek Bhatnagar.

After recovering from donating part of his liver, Ishaque had resumed his normal life but eventually developed heart disease and between 2000 and 2016, received six stents for his heart ailment. Recently, he developed chest pain and coronary angiography revealed multiple blocks that needed urgent bypass surgery.

The multiple bypass surgery was conducted on October 1 and Ishaque was discharged on Wednesday. “The main aim was to protect the patient’s liver and we employed beating heart surgery technique and avoided open heart surgery. The surgery was performed without stopping the heart and liver continued to receive blood flow which optimised its function, Dr. Bhatnagar said.

The beating heart bypass surgery gives better protection to organs like liver in a post donor stage, as compared to open heart surgery. Patients who have been organ donors should not hesitate from getting operated and getting their health back on track, he said.
