ABVP seeks release of seven detained members after EFLU clash

Hyderabad: ABVP EFLU unit on Sunday demanded the State government immediately and unconditionally release seven of its members who were wrongly detained by police after a clash between ABVP and NSUI members on the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) campus here on August 13 and 14.

In a statement, the ABVP EFLU said that seven ABVP members have been sent to judicial custody, while only one NSUI member has been taken into custody. It wanted immediate arrest and medical tests of all individuals found to be involved in the alleged 3 am attack on a second-year BA student affiliated with ABVP by 20 NSUI members.

The clash occurred on August 14 following an argument between the cadres of the two student groups during a protest by ABVP members at a women’s hostel a day earlier.

The NSUI accused the ABVP members of making casteist slurs against a student, besides assaulting the EFLU Students’ union Vice-President. It further alleged that a group of ABVP members attacked its members with sticks and glass bottles, leaving several students injured.

However, according to the ABVP EFLU Unit, on August 13, one of the wardens spoke rudely and made certain remarks against two female students who had requested to stay as inmates.

Subsequently, ABVP claimed its members raised the issue and held a peaceful protest in support of the students and also highlighted concerns regarding basic hostel facilities, including clean washrooms and safe drinking water.

“During the protest, NSUI members attempted to disrupt the peaceful demonstration through arguments and abusive language,” it alleged.

Further, the ABVP EFLU wanted the university to initiate strict administrative action, including suspension of the hostel warden, over the insulting and threatening conduct towards female students.

“We want an end to police bias and political interference by the ruling Congress government in Telangana in matters concerning the university,” it added.
