Nirmal: Sri Gnana Saraswathi Devasthanam (SGSD) of Basar registered an income of Rs 51.77 lakh for a period of 39 days. Counting of offerings through hundis was held on the premises of the shrine on Tuesday.

In-charge Executive Officer of the temple K Vinod Reddy said that the shrine recorded Rs 51,77,527 income by way of offerings by devotees and sales of tickets of various rituals from September 30 to November 7. The temple also had eight foreign currency notes donated by unidentified devotees.

The temple’s governing committee chairman Sharath Pathak, AEO Sudharshan Goud and In-charge supervisor Sanjeev Rao were present. Members of Rajanna-Sircilla Shivashakti organisation and devotees took part in the counting. SGSD is the only temple that houses goddess Saraswathi in southern India. Parents throng this shrine for performing Aksharabhayasam, a customary ritual for initiating children into education and world of alphabets. It is believed that sage Vyas had worshipped goddess Saraswathi during the times of Mahabharatha by staying on the banks of Godavari.
