Adilabad: An eleven-year-old boy was hospitalized after he was saved from drowning while trying to learn swimming in a pool of Sports Authority of Telangana at Indira Priyadarshini stadium here on Thursday. His condition is stated to be critical.

The boy, Kasulam Shrikar, a Class VI student of Barampur, lost consciousness when he drowned in the pool. He was immediately admitted to Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS)-Adilabad. Doctors said that the boy swallowed lot of water, which affected the functioning of lungs and other key organs. He was later shifted to a hospital in Hyderabad.

District Youth and Sports Officer Venkateshwar said that Shrikar tried to swim without an air ball, resulting in the incident at the end of the coaching session. The two coaches, who were present at the pool, thought the boy went to toilet when they did not spot him. They rescued him after noticing that he was drowning and shifted him to RIMS.

The DYSO further said that A batch of around 30 students was learning to swim in the pool under the guidance of two SAT coaches. Swimming has been taught at the pool for the last 20 years and not a single incident of drowning was reported here so far. An inquiry would be ordered into the incident. Steps were going to be taken to prevent similar instances in future, he stated. In the meantime, district Olympics Association president B Govardhan Reddy visited the RIMS and enquired about the accident.
