Adilabad farmer allegedly dies by suicide over crop losses, mounting debts
A 35-year-old farmer allegedly died by suicide in Adilabad’s Pippalkot village after suffering crop losses and struggling with mounting debts. Police said he had borrowed Rs 12 lakh and spent Rs 8 lakh on his son’s treatment before selling land.
Adilabad: A 35-year-old farmer died allegedly by suicide after being depressed over losses in farming and mounting debts at Pippalkot village on Friday night. The incident came to light on Saturday.
Police said that Burgula Ashok consumed pesticide by 10 pm as he was disheartened by losses in farming caused due to unfavorable climatic conditions. He was also upset over his inability to repay mounting debts.
Ashok raised cotton, pigeon pea and other crops in his five acres of land by reportedly borrowing Rs 2 lakh from a bank and availed a loan of Rs 10 lakh from informal sources at exorbitant rates of interest. He spent Rs 8 lakh for providing treatment to his son who was diagnosed with a brain-related ailment in Nizamabad. He sold two acres of land, but could not repay the loans.
A beneficiary of Indiramma housing scheme, Ashok performed a house warming ceremony. However, he did not shift to the newly constructed home.
