Adilabad: Erstwhile Adilabad district will have 29 new liquor retail shops for the year 2021-23, as per the policy of the government. Notification with regard to the allotment of licenses to the outlets was declared on Tuesday.

Currently, there are, in total, 163 liquor shops in the erstwhile Adilabad district for the year 2019-21. The quantum of the outlets increased to 192, translating into a rise of 15 percent. The Nirmal district will have 10 new outlets, while Adilabad district got 9 shops. Six new shops were allotted to Kumram Bheem Asifabad district and four have been created in Mancherial district, as per information available with authorities of Prohibition and Excise department.

With the addition of new liquor shops, Adilabad district has now 40 outlets. Mancherial accounts for 73 shops while Nirmal and Kumram Bheem Asifabad districts will have 47 and 32 outlets, respectively. Mandals, which were created under reorganisation of the districts, are now going to have two wine shops each. Mandals that register higher income will have shops apart from the villages that see considerable sales. However, the creation of new outlets is likely to help the government record more income than that of the past, with many showing interest to secure licenses for the shops for the next two years.

In the meantime, the quote of reservations for various communities was also finalised by authorities concerned on Monday evening. A total of 12 shops were allotted to members of Gouda community while 24 outlets were earmarked for Scheduled Communities and 19 shops were reserved for Scheduled Tribes. As many as 135 shops have been kept aside for open category.

The right to sell Indian-Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) for the license period from December 1, 2021 to November 30 of 2023 shall be granted upon the selection through draw of lots slated to be conducted in the district headquarters of Adilabad, Mancherial, Nirmal and Kumram Bheem Asifabad districts on November 20.

Walk-in stores with Rs 5 lakh additional tax

As per the new Excise Policy: 2021-23, the liquor shop owners can set up walk-in stores for the customers by paying Rs 5 lakh additional tax to the Excise Department, for the convenience of customers instead of making them lineup beside the roads. They can also display liquor glasses, bottle openers, ice boxes and other items in walk-in store, said Deputy Commissioner of Excise Arjun Rao.

He said that notification was issued for 155 liquor shops in the district. Among them, 14 shops reserved for SCs, four for STs and 34 for Gouda community as per the decision by the State government. The last date for submission of the applications for liquor outlets was November 18.
