Adilabad: MLA Jogu Ramanna said that Sakhi centres would bring respite to women facing domestic violence and sexual harassment and other tortures. He formally inaugurated a building meant for the centre here on Saturday. The cost of the facility was Rs 48 lakh.
Ramanna stated that Sakhi Centre, operated by Mitra Service Society, was a one stop destination for women in crisis. He said that women could report their problems by dialing helpline 181. Teams of the centre would rush to the spot and rescue women. He added that the centre was raising awareness among various forms of violence among the women by conducting meetings in rural parts.
The MLA further said that the centre registered 1,120 cases so far and of them, 753 cases were addressed. As many as 246 cases were pending at courts, while 112 cases were yet to be resolved. Suggestions were given to 1,307 women and temporary accommodation was extended to 229 women. Medical services were provided to 146 women and legal aid was given to 290 women.
District Welfare Officer Milka expressed gratitude to Ramanna for granting Rs 10 lakh to construct the building. She read out a message sent by MP Soyam Bapu Rao who could not grace the occasion. Rao urged the women to utilize the services of the centre and appreciated staffers of the centre for discharging quality services.
Ramanna later unveiled wall posters relating to helpline 181 and distributed saris to Anganwadi workers and ayahs.
Adilabad municipal chairperson Jogu Premender, Additional Collector Rizwan Shaik Basha, municipal commissioner Shailaja, minority welfare officer Krishnaveni, Sakhi centre administrator Yashoda and staffers were present.
