Adilabad tenant farmer allegedly dies by suicide over mounting debts, second death in 24 hours
A 55-year-old tenant farmer allegedly died by suicide in Thalamadugu village after becoming distressed over mounting debts and lower-than-expected soybean yield. The death came a day after another farmer from the same village allegedly died amid financial distress.
Adilabad: A tenant farmer died allegedly by suicide after depressing over his inability to repay mounting debts at Thalamadugu village on Tuesday evening. It is the second suicide in this village in a gap of 24 hours.
Police said that Gurrala Prathapa Reddy (55) from the village resorted to the drastic step by consuming a pesticide. He died while being shifted to RIMS-Adilabad.
Prathapa Reddy raised cotton and soy crops by leasing out 12 acres. He availed around Rs 8 lakh to cultivate the crops. He harvested the soy crop recently, but he did not register yield as much as he expected. He was disheartened by his inability to clear the debts.
Surender Reddy, son of Prathapa Reddy lodged a complaint with police. A case has been registered. Investigations are underway.
On Monday, Kade Lasmanna (65) from Thalamadugu died by hanging at his agriculture field over an alleged financial crisis. He raised cotton crop in 2.20 acres by borrowing Rs 3 lakh and performed the wedding of his daughter by availing loan of Rs 3 lakh. He was upset after the crop failure supposedly due to scanty rainfall.
