Hyderabad: For G Vijay Kumar, who was into badminton for fitness sake but soon developed a serious passion for the sport, it was another immensely satisfying moment when he finished runner-up in the 75 years and above category of the Krishna District badminton championship.
In sport, it is not always what one wins that matters, but what is more important is the way one keeps motivated to stay in the race. And, Vijay Kumar, perhaps, stands as a perfect definition of the old adage – age is only a number.
Interestingly, Vijay Kumar may not have set the badminton courts on fire with any stunning achievements, but this quiet achiever has been an inspiration for many young talents in the Our Zone play facility, where he trains daily on a pay and play scheme, often the schedule stretching to a minimum of three games.
Yes, this fighter did make an impression, finishing runner-up in State doubles and singles.
With father Lava Kumar being a former national ball badminton player, Vijay Kumar had a natural inclination towards sport, and he looks at badminton to stay fit and enjoy every moment.
“My diet is pretty simple, and I don’t go to a gym or indulge in any serious physical conditioning activities except going on a morning walk. But it is badminton that keeps me going, and I am enjoying it,” says Vijay, who can be clearly a huge motivation for many budding talents in terms of pursuing one’s passion for a sport.
