Guwahati: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), a key ally of the BJP-led NDA in Assam, on Thursday reiterated its support for the formation of the new government in the state and said they wish to have Himanta Biswa Sarma as Chief Minister for a second term.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting, AGP President Atul Bora said discussions were held in a positive atmosphere, and senior leaders and committee members expressed confidence in the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma. “We have shared our thoughts collectively, and all members of the committee expressed their views positively. The proposal that was adopted unanimously has also been submitted jointly,” Bora said.

He said the AGP remains firmly committed to the NDA alliance and would continue extending support to the coalition government in Assam. Referring to the development initiatives undertaken during the previous tenure of CM Sarma, Bora said visible progress in several sectors had strengthened public confidence in the alliance.

“The development that has taken place over the last few years under the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma has encouraged people across Assam. Because of that, the public has once again extended support to the NDA,” he said. Bora further stated that workers and supporters of the alliance actively campaigned among the people and highlighted the achievements of the government ahead of the formation of the new administration.

According to him, the alliance partners have collectively placed their views before the leadership and are working in coordination to ensure political stability and continued development in the state. The AGP chief also indicated that the alliance would continue focusing on infrastructure, welfare measures, and safeguarding the interests of Assam and its people.

The NDA, led by the BJP in Assam, is preparing for the swearing-in of the new Council of Ministers scheduled to be held in Guwahati on May 12. Several senior BJP leaders and chief ministers from NDA-ruled states are expected to attend the ceremony. AGP has remained one of the principal regional allies of the BJP in Assam and has been part of the ruling coalition government in the state for consecutive terms.
