Hyderabad: With an aim to strengthen its position in the villages in Telangana, the All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is fielding its candidates from different districts in the upcoming Gram Panchayat elections to be held in three phases on December 11, 14 and 17 in the State.

The party is focusing on districts such as Jagityal, Nizamabad, Asifabad, Adilabad, Medak, Mancherial, Nirmal and other places to set its foot on the ground on a larger scale. Party sources said AIMIM is keen on contesting and backing its candidates in villages and mandals where it has a good presence.

With former GHMC corporator Najma Sultana, wife of Karwan MLA Syed Kausar Mohiuddin, unanimously elected as sarpanch of Baswapur village in Veldurthi mandal, the party is on a high.

Party sources said the district presidents and the party workers have chosen and backed good candidates in several villages where AIMIM has a strong presence. “The district level leaders have identified candidates for the Gram Panchayat elections, the party acknowledged their decision and is backing the candidates,” said a reliable source in the party.

Meanwhile, AIMIM has not revealed its cards on the West Bengal elections which are expected to be held during March and April next year.

The party, during the last Assembly elections in 2021, contested from seven seats Malatipur, Sagardighi, Asansol Uttar, Bharatpur, Itahar, Ratua and Jalangi but failed to win any seat.

“It is too early to say whether the party will contest or not. The party will hold a meeting with the West Bengal unit after the notification is issued and then decide whether to contest or not depending on the ground situation at that point of time,” said party sources.
