Medak: Special Chief Secretary (Forest) A Shantha Kumari said that they were aiming to make Hyderabad a Canopy Density number one city by planting two crore saplings in forest blocks spread over 1.60 lakh acres in and around the city this year. “The plantation drive was launched in 2021 and the target to get the tag of canopy density one city is September,” she said.
Talking to officials during her visit to Urban Park at Wadiyaram village in Chegunta Mandal on Wednesday, Shantha Kumari said they also planned to plant 4.42 lakh plants in 528 hectares of land in Wadiyaram, Polampally and Chandampet forest blocks in Chegunta Mandal. Apart from Wadiyaram Urban Park, she said they were also developing urban parks in Parikibanda and Manoharabad in Medak district which can become the best recreation spot for the citizens.
Shanta Kumari said the parks will help in maintaining ecological balance following rapid urbanisation. She went around Wadiyaram Park to see the progress of the plantation and the development of the park. She also visited a check dam built in the forest block. To mark her visit, the senior IAS officer planted a sapling at the urban park.
Enquiring about the presence of wildlife in the forest blocks, she wanted to know if the thick plantation will impact the life of Chousingha which was found in abundance in the area. Additional Collector Prathima Singh, Chief Conservator of Forests Saravanan, DFO Medak Ravi Prasad, DFO Siddipet Ch Sridhar Rao, HMDA Director Prabhakar, DRDO Project Director Srinivas Rao and others were present.
