Alarming Trend: Covid cases in Hyderabad triple in a week

From 35 infections on March 17, cases from areas under GHMC keep rising each day to cross 100-mark on Monday, reach 111 on Tuesday

Hyderabad: Areas under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and adjoining districts continue to report an incremental growth in the number of Covid-19 positive cases, pushing the overall tally of infections in the State.

On Tuesday, the number of Covid cases from GHMC areas went up to 111 and the overall cases in the State rose to 431. On Monday, the State had recorded 412 cases while areas under the GHMC had reported 103 cases.


The spike, albeit in smaller numbers, continued to be reported from neighbouring districts too with the number of cases from Medchal-Malkajgiri going up from 31 on Monday to 37 on Tuesday and that of Rangareddy district rising from 27 to 31. The cases in Sangareddy almost doubled from eight on Monday to 16 on Tuesday while the pattern was similar in Mancherial where the cases rose from 9 to 21 between Monday and Tuesday.

As per the bulletin by the Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, two deaths due to Covid were reported on Tuesday taking the total fatalities due to the infection in the State to 1,676. There were 3,352 active cases in the State with 1,395 individuals being in home or institutional isolation. The cumulative figures from the bulletin put the total Covid-19 positive cases so far at 3,04,298 with 2,99,270 of them having recovered at a recovery rate of 98.34 per cent as against the country’s average of 95.5 per cent.

In the last one week, the number of Covid-19 positive cases in Hyderabad has more than tripled. From 35 cases on March 17, the cases from areas under the GHMC kept rising each day to cross the 100-mark on Monday and reached 111 on Tuesday. During the same week, the cases from Medchal-Malkajgiri went up from 21 to 37 while Rangareddy district reported a rise in cases from 12 on March 17 to 31 on March 23.

Testing

Adhering to the test-trace-treat strategy, the Health Department continued with its efforts to ramp up the testing of samples and a total of 70,280 samples were collected and tested for Covid-19 on Tuesday, as against 68,171 tests on Monday.

The Director of Public Health and Family Welfare reiterated his appeal to citizens to strictly follow Covid guidelines

The guidelines included:

Vulnerable age groups: Children less than 10 years of age and elders above 60 years are advised to avoid going outdoors unless mandatory.

Face masks: Everybody should wear mask when he/she goes out of the house. Face masks are the first line of defence against Covid-19 and not wearing a mask is punishable by fine.

Physical distancing: Maintaining a distance of more than 6ft between people is essential. Those going out for groceries and other essentials advised to maintain safe physical distance.

Workspace: The work spaces are to be provided with soap and hand washing facility/sanitizer. Adequate physical distancing between employees has to be maintained.

Travel: Citizens requested to avoid unnecessary travel. In case it is unavoidable, they should take all safety precautions.

Medical care: In case of any flu/influenza like symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, running nose, difficulty in breathing, body pains and headache, report to the nearest government health facility.

Co-morbid conditions: People with co-morbid conditions like hypertension, diabetes, cardiac illness, chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cancer and/or any other chronic illness requested to stay indoors and avoid any kind of travel except for medical care.
