Hyderabad: Algoma University (often called as Algoma U or Algoma) is a public university with its main campus located in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada.
Established in 1965 as Algoma College, Algoma University was initially an affiliate of Laurentian University in Sudbury and gained independence from its origin in 2008. Algoma College started its classes in a portable building located at the Cambrian College site, which is now the Sault College site before moving into its current location-formerly the Shingwauk Residential School Building.
Algoma houses three campuses, which are Sault Ste. Marie, Timmins, and Brampton. Located in the heart of the Great Lakes, Sault Ste. Marie is the main campus, providing a unique, historically rich setting for inter-cultural communities in which Anishinaabe (First Nation, Métis, and Inuit), Canadian, and international students learn from one another in a spirit of friendship and respect. The campus is flourished by international students from over 30 different countries making up to 27% of its student body.
Algoma University’s Brampton campus is located in a lively city in the Greater Toronto Area. The Brampton campus is home to programs such as Business Administration, Finance and Economics, Computer Science, Psychology, Law and Justice, and Environmental Studie swith distinctive specialisations. Graduate certificate programmes in Business Administration, Human Resources Management, and Information Technology are also offered at the Brampton campus.
Located in Northern Ontario, Timmins houses the Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology campus. Algoma U, through the Timmins Campus, provides diploma-to-degree programs with the opportunity for students to study online at the comfort of their living at home. Programs like the Bachelor of Social Work and a Bachelor of Art in Community Development are also offered by Algoma University on the campus of Northern College in Timmins.
Inclined towards research, Algoma University in association with CESD works for NORDIK Institute. It has established strong links with other research institutes, universities, and colleges. NORDIK works closely with its community partners and is committed to further developing its research capacity as well as providing mentoring to new researchers.
Algoma University offers more than 40 programs both three-year and four-year bachelor’s in disciplines such as Biology, Business, Computer Science, Community Development, English, Geography, History, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Political Science, Music, and Fine Arts through it three facilities; Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, and the Faculty of Humanities.
Whether a student is interested in Psychology or Visual Arts, Business Administration, or Law & Justice, Algoma U has a wide range of courses for everyone. It also offers about nine undergraduate certificate and graduate certificate programs, both one-year and two-year certificates in disciplines such as Project Management, Information Technology, Human Management, Computing, Business, Health Science, and Software Development.
Algoma Thunderbirds participate in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) conferences in the sports of basketball, soccer, cross-country running, curling, wrestling, and Nordic Skiing.
Algoma University is in the top 31% of universities in the world, ranking 75th in Canada and 4316th globally. Algoma is ranked #1205 of 2629 in North America; #21 of 24 in Ontario; #1 of 1 in Sault Ste. Marie. The university has a list of notable alumni that includes human rights activist Michael Cachagee, Olympics gold medallist Ryan Harnden, advocate Sherley Fletcher Horn, professional ice hockey player Kevin Hodson, water activist Josephine Mandamin, author and artist Roxanne Martin, and author Joanne Robertson.
