Ananya Parsa, a budding Kuchipudi dancer from Raleigh in North Carolina in the United States, captured the imagination of the audience with her scintillating Arangetram performance on July 5 at Ravindra Bharati in Hyderabad. Her debut solo performance showcased her skills to a distinguished audience, marking her transition from a bubbly student to an accomplished performer.
Literally, it marked Ananya’s graduation after her eight-year-long rigorous, gruelling training under the tutelage of Guru Kubherini, herself a disciple of renowned danseuse Padma Shri Shobha Naidu. For Ananya, it is a significant milestone in her journey of exploration of the Kuchipudi dance form.
Ananya Parsa excels in the different aspects of Kuchipudi dance. These include her precision footwork (Nritta), expressiveness of her hand gestures (Mudras), and her ability to convey emotions through facial expressions (Abhinaya). Ananya has to her credit 31 stage performances, starting from local events to performances at the divine abode of the Tirumala Temple and at the World Fashion Week in Times Square in New York.
Torch-Bearers
In a stirring message on the occasion, Chief Guest Sandhya Raju, renowned Kuchipudi exponent and choreographer, who played the lead role in the dance-based Telugu film Natyam, beautifully weaved different strands into a unifying bouquet of this typical Telugu art form. Sandhya Raju and Kubherini, teacher of Ananya Parsa, both disciples of Shobha Naidu, are the torch-bearers of this classical dance form.
Sandhya Raju linked Ananya Parsa’s performance with the proud lineage of Vempati Chinna Satyam and Shobha Naidu, who, with their path-breaking efforts, brought Kuchipudi to its most wonderful representation. “It is now Ananya’s rite of passage to carry this forward, to expand, experiment and build upon this exquisite Vidya, so caringly handed down to her by her teacher.”
