Visakhapatnam: With the trade unions getting ready to organise protests against privatisation of Visakhapatnam steel plant at Jantar Mantar in Delhi at the beginning of August, BJP leaders from Andhra Pradesh met the Union Minister for Steel in New Delhi on Thursday seeking dropping of the proposal to privatise the plant.
State BJP president Somu Veerraju and Member of Legislative Council from north Andhra PVN Madhav led a delegation of displaced persons and steel workers and submitted a memorandum to the minister on the occasion.
According to Madhav, the delegation had pleaded to the minister to merge the steel plant either in NMDC or SAIL so that the steel plant which was set up after 32 people sacrificed their lives could continue in the public sector to respect public sentiment. The minister had responded positively, he claimed.
Veerraju had urged the steel minister to provide a permanent solution to the displaced persons who suffered due to lack of employment opportunities since long, the MLC revealed.
