Amaravati: YSRCP leader and former minister Merugu Nagarjuna on Sunday condemned the TDP-led NDA government’s alleged attempt to “forcibly acquire” 8,000 acres in Karedu village in Prakasam district.

Nagarjuna claimed that the government is moving ahead with land acquisition without public consent, putting farmers’ livelihoods at risk in the name of industrial development.

“Forcibly seizing farmers’ lands without their approval is not only unacceptable but sets a dangerous precedent,” the YSRCP leader said, addressing a press conference.

He warned that it could lead to serious unrest. Nagarjuna claimed that during the previous YSRCP government, all land acquisitions were done with farmers’ consent and transparency while ensuring their interests were never compromised.

He questioned the rationale behind acquiring new lands when previously allotted plots remain unutilised, hinting at possible large-scale financial irregularities in the process.

“Why issue fresh notifications when thousands of acres are lying vacant? What’s the real motive behind this hurried move?” he asked, raising serious concerns. He asserted that the YSRCP would not tolerate threats or coercion against farmers and is prepared to launch statewide protests to defend their land and livelihood.

The former minister urged the NDA government to abandon plans allegedly targeting fertile farmland and demanded full transparency and public approval before taking any further acquisition steps.

“The government’s actions seem to be designed to provoke conflicts and destabilise rural communities,” Nagarjuna alleged, adding that such policies reflect a disregard for people’s welfare. Meanwhile, there was no immediate reaction from the ruling TDP.
