New Delhi: Anju Bobby George, 2003 World Athletics Championships women’s Long Jump bronze medallist, was on Monday confirmed as the Athletes Commission representative in the Indian Olympic Association Executive Board.
At a meeting of the IOA Executive Board at the Olympic Bhavan here on Monday, there was some confusion about who would represent the Athletes Commission.
<
Malav Shroff, who went to the 2000 Olympic Games as a sailor and had been nominated to the Executive Board some years ago, had the backing of a few members. Others insisted that it would be Anju Bobby George who was elected a couple of years ago after the Commission was formed.
As there was no agreement, the matter was put to vote and Anju Bobby George secured 17 votes to Malav Shroff’s 5 with one abstention.
Since the former Long Jumper, who is now a Senior Vice President of the Athletics Federation of India, was being backed by the IOA President Dr. Narinder Dhruv Batra, many are seeing this as the tilting of scales towards him in the impending elections at the annual general meeting on December 19.
