Hyderabad: Far from the madding crowds is not just a novel anymore. It has become something that everyone wants these days of the pandemic. And what better way than a long drive to a picturesque spot to experience that soothing feeling of peace.
The Ranganayaka Sagar is the big brother of the Kondapochamma Sagar and is in Siddipet. The 100-odd-km drive, especially in this weather, could be just what the doctor orders for the soul, given the smooth highway, with enough fuel bunks and hotels en route.

Starting a bit early in the morning would be a good idea. Breakfast won’t be a problem because there are some really clean and good roadside eateries a little after the Shamirpet Lake. It will always be a good idea to have a good breakfast and also carry snacks and lunch, because the Ranganayaka Sagar is still a developing place, which is actually what makes it all the more an exciting trip or picnic, especially for children.
Constructed under the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme to meet the drinking water requirements of those living in Siddipet and Sircilla constituencies and to bring Godavari water nearer to Hyderabad as well, the reservoir is a stunning picture of beauty. The 14-km blacktop road around the water body is a great place to stop and enjoy the breeze, but the long bridge leading to the beautiful island in the middle of the reservoir will take you to more soothing sights.
A Haritha Hotel is expected to open soon on the island, with the building already completed. The island also accommodates the office of the Irrigation Department Superintendent Engineer.
The reservoir is not the only sight. The greenery and sights of the beautiful rural life of Telangana along the way to the place makes the journey all the more an experience.
