Mancherial: Close on the heels of a student’s death by suicide, another student attempted to die allegedly by consuming dettol, a disinfectant chemical, at a government-run Social Welfare Residential College in Chennur on Saturday evening. The reason for her attempt is yet to be ascertained.
Students said that Gottala Sharanya, studying Class VIII tried to kill herself by consuming the disinfectant at her hostel. She was nrushed to a government hospital in Mancherial town. Her condition is said to be stable.
However, parents expressed concern over safety of students and their supervision by teachers working at the college. They urged officials to take steps to prevent suicides at the institution by improving monitoring and addressing their challenges. They wanted to have mentors for each student to closely track pupils.
On March 29, Shri Indu (13), a Class VII student from the college, who attempted to die by suicide by consuming pesticide as she was allegedly depressed after being harassed by teachers of the institution and death of her uncle, died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mancherial district centre. She tried to end her life was immediately admitted to a government hospital in Chennur on March 25. She was then shifted to the private hospital, but she died later.
Two teachers were suspended for their responsibility in the death of the student, based on a report submitted by a committee on March 30. Parents staged a sit in at the hospital demanding action against the teachers.
