Anti-CAA Protest: UoH SU demands withdrawal of FIR registered against students
Various student associations of the UoH had formed a coordination committee to take part in the protest against the CAA called by the MANUU students union on the MANUU campus
Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad Students’ Union on Sunday demanded that the FIR registered against varsity students be withdrawn immediately.
According to the students’ union, an FIR was registered at Raidurgam Police Station against 14 students for participating in the protest against the CAA at the Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) in February this year.
Various student associations of the UoH had formed a coordination committee to take part in the protest against the CAA called by the MANUU students union on the MANUU campus.
According to the FIR, on February 21, about 20 to 30 students of UoH illegally gathered at Coffee Day Shop and conducted rally from there till inside the MANUU campus.
Students showed placard and raised slogans against the central government and gave ‘lecture which was provocative to break tranquillity’ at the university, it said, adding that rally was conducted without taking permission from either MANUU authorities or from the police.
“Initially, the police stopped us at the gate but later they allowed us as we were not going in the group. We held a rally from the main road till inside campus. After reaching the MANUU, peaceful gathering had taken place inside the campus. Now after seven months into the protest, the FIR was registered and notice has been issued to me,” said Manikanta P, an MPhil student.
He said while the notice was dispatched on October 8 and received by him on October 10, the police wanted him to appear on October 6.
“We demand the police to immediately withdraw all cases registered against university students,” UoH Students’ Union general secretary Gopi Swamy said.
