Hyderabad: Buddhavanam Project Special Officer Mallepalli Laxmaiah on Monday slammed the State BJP unit for appealing to the Election Commission to defer the implementation of Dalit Bandhu scheme in Huzurabad constituency.

“This is an anti-Dalit initiative by the BJP with a politically-driven agenda. I sincerely appeal to the Election Commission to reconsider its decision of deferring the scheme in Huzurabad constituency,” Laxmaiah said.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao introduced the Dalit Bandhu scheme to ensure welfare and development of Dalits and had also made public announcement in Vasalamarri village about the scheme. As a pilot project, the scheme was being implemented in five constituencies in the State, he pointed out.

Dalit Bandhu, a Dalit empowerment scheme, was announced by the State government and funds allocation was also made in the budget last year, he said, adding: “It is an ongoing scheme and not a new scheme.”

Interestingly, while BJP State General Secretary G Premender Reddy wrote a letter to the Election Commission about the scheme, BJP State president Bandi Sanjay claims ignorance over the move, he said. “How can a party general secretary approach Election Commission without the consent of the party president? This exposes Bandi Sanjay’s dual standards,” Laxmaiah fumed.

This move of the BJP will have an adverse impact on the saffron party’s prospects and will be dubbed as an anti-Dalit party, he said.
