Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh High Court on Friday cancelled the Zilla Parishad elections held on April 7 and directed the State Election Commission to issue fresh notification and conduct fresh elections.
The opposition parties filed cases against holding the parishad elections and demanded that these elections should be held with fresh notification as the mandatory four weeks’ time was not given before the polls.
The court, after a few hearings, finally cancelled the elections and directed the SEC to conduct the elections afresh.
The SEC had issued notification on April 1 stating that the parishad elections for the Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTC) and Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTC) were resumed from where they were postponed on March 15, 2020. The parishad elections were put off for six weeks by the SEC due to the COVID pandemic. But they were not resumed although the elections for panchayats and urban local bodies were resumed and completed in March.
After the successful completion of the panchayat and local body polls, the SEC resumed the parishad elections and conducted them on April 7.
