Hyderabad: The Shadnagar police arrested a man on charges of trying to sell wood from other trees as red sandalwood at Tammajipet thanda, Burgula village on Thursday. Police seized about 170 tree logs worth Rs 15 lakh.
The arrested person is A Brahmaiah (28), a resident of Errabelli village, Maidukuru mandal of YSR Kadapa district in Andhra Pradesh.
Police said Brahmaiah procured the wood during an auction held at the Forest Office in Nandyal of Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh in November 2020 and transported them in a truck to Shadnagar. He further took the agricultural land of one Srihari Sharma for rent and dumped the wooden logs there. He also employed a watchman to take care of the material.
“He waited for an opportunity to cheat people and sell them off as red sandalwood, but we raided the place and thwarted his attempt. He was nabbed from his house,” said an official.
