In the first among the Latin American countries, Argentina has come out with an inclusive move that takes different gender identities into account. The country has introduced new ID cards for non-binary people, where people can select ‘X’ as their gender on their passports and national identity cards. President Alberto Fernández unveiled the new ID cards at the capital city Buenos Aires on Thursday.
Under the national law, Argentinians have the right to identify themselves as gender neutral. The move comes under growing calls accounting for other identities besides that of man and woman. The country’s official gazette now states that an ‘X’ will signify a number of statuses ranging from non-binary, indeterminate, unspecified, not reported, self-perceived, to ‘another meaning which can be used to identify a person who does not feel understood under the male/female binary.”
With this move, Argentina joins countries who have adopted similar systems for formal identities like New Zealand, Canada and Australia.
