Kothagudem: An army jawan hailing from Bhadrachalam town in the district was trampled to death by an elephant in Assam.
The 42-year-old jawan, Konga Saichander Rao, serving in the rank of Naib Subedar, belonged to Ashok Nagar Kotha Colony in the town. He joined the Indian Army 10 years ago. He was stationed at an army unit based at Thakurbari, Rangapara tehsil in Sonitpur district of Assam.
The incident occurred at section 16 of the Namgaon tea estate in Rangapara. Two army personnel from the Army Cantonment in Amribari were taking a walk in the afternoon on Sunday when a wild elephant charged at them.
While trying to escape from the elephant, Saichander Rao fell and was trampled upon by the animal leading to his instant death. He was survived by his wife, a son and daughter.
Saichander Rao visited his family six months ago and was expected to visit Bhadrachalam this December. His body was expected to be brought to Bhadrachalam at 2 am on Tuesday by the army officials. A pall of gloom descended on the town with the death of the jawan belonging to the town.
