ASCI holds public lecture on “Shaping Competition Regime in the Era of Digitization”

Hyderabad: Competition Commission of India (CCI) Chairperson Ashok Kumar Gupta said the Central Government was introducing many regulatory reforms to address different issues in the digital space.

The CCI has recently participated in deliberations for drafting the National E-commerce policy of India. In view of the increasing number of cases, complexity in the digital sector and the increasing need for data and technology skills, plans were being made to set up a dedicated digital markets unit within the Commission as a Center of Expertise for digital markets, he said.

Addressing at the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) public lecture on “Shaping Competition Regime in the Era of Digitization” virtually on Monday, he said CCI would continue to assist the government’s endeavor of digitisation by promoting competitive digital markets. Rapid adoption of digital technologies was witnessed in the country and Covid pandemic provided further impetus. Rapid digitization was transforming communication, retail, food, health, education, finance sectors, he informed.

The CCI Chairperson said 87 per cent India has fintech adoption rate globally against the global average of 64 per cent. In 2020, India constituted four per cent of the total 2018 billion app installations globally. In 2021, India became the second-largest market in the world for app downloads. India has emerged as one of the biggest and fastest-growing digital consumer bases, he said.

“This opened up an enormous range of possibilities. At the same time, it has also led us to rely on a small cohort of large technology platforms,” said Ashok Kumar Gupta. ASCI Dean of Training Programmes Dr. Valli Manickam welcomed and introduced the speaker, while ASCI Chairman K Padmanabhaiah delivered the opening remarks.
