Asees Kaur’s dream came true when she worked with Academy Award-winning musician AR Rahman in ‘Meri Pukaar Suno’. Released by Sony Music India with lyrics by Gulzar, the soul-stirring track, filled with hope and positivity has been sung by Asees, Alka Yagnik, Shreya Ghoshal, KS Chithra, Sadhana Sargam, Armaan Malik and Shashaa Tirupati. The song featured on two iconic billboards in New York and Los Angeles, and has been bringing a sense of positivity in people’s lives in these pandemic times.
‘Telangana Today’ caught up with Asees, who is known for songs like ‘Ve Maahi’ for ‘Kesari’ and ‘Bol Na’ for ‘Kapoor and Sons’, to discuss her experience working with Rahman, upcoming projects, her musical journey and more.
How was it working with legends on the song?
This was my first collaboration with AR Rahman and Gulzar. While I was excited when I got the opportunity, I was quite nervous too. It’s every singer’s dream to sing Rahman sir’s song. Because of the pandemic I couldn’t go to Chennai to record it, so we all recorded from our houses and what you see on YouTube is the final version.
Tell us about the Instagram challenge #SingwithAsees
I started this challenge on World Music Day to encourage upcoming singers. The challenge was done on Roposo app and I would nominate people to sing something, and the best 2-3 videos would be reshared by me. They also received personalised gifts. This is my way to help upcoming singers to be seen – we managed to get over two crore videos under the hashtag.
What are your other projects?
Recently, I had two more songs that were released – ‘Aaya Jadon Da’ featuring Aparshakti Khurana and Parul Gulati and ‘Tenu Yaad Karaan’ featuring Gurnazar Chatta and Jasmin Bhasin. It’s been quite a hectic time – I even sang a number ‘Lakeeran’ in the recent Netflix movie ‘Haseen Dillruba’. I also sang ‘O Jogiya’ in the web series ‘Grahan’. I am working hard on a few more songs.
How has your musical journey been so far?
It’s been quite amazing. I started by singing Gurbani at the age of 5, and then seven years ago came to Mumbai. My dream has always been to sing for films.
Any musical inspirations?
I love Arijit Singh, and I absolutely adore his singing style. I consider myself lucky that I got the opportunity to work with him on a couple of songs.
What are your other interests?
I love working out – it keeps me physically fit and mentally happy. I indulge in Yoga and meditation as well. I love spending time with my family because they are your biggest support – it has been my greatest learning in the pandemic period. I enjoy Sufi music. I love binge-watching Netflix shows like ‘Blacklist’, ‘Money Heist’ and ‘Schitt’s Creek’.
Advice for upcoming talent..
There will be days when you doubt yourself and whether you’ve chosen the right path or not, but don’t give up. Always work hard and give your 100 percent. Never lose hope.
