Asian Games Judo: Ashmita Dey’s medal quest ends in 48kg

Indian judoka Ashmita Dey lost her women’s 48kg bronze medal bout to Mongolia’s Narantsetseg Ganbaatar at the Asian Games in Nagoya. The reigning Commonwealth Games champion had reached the bronze medal contest after winning her repechage bout against Hong Kong China’s Ka Lee Wong

Nagoya: Indian judoka Ashmita Dey lost her bronze medal bout against Mongolia’s Narantsetseg Ganbaatar in the women’s 48kg category and returned empty-handed from the Asian Games here on Wednesday.

The reigning Commonwealth Games champion lost by waza against Ganbaatar in the bronze medal contest.

Ashmita had progressed to the bronze medal contest after winning her repechage bout against Hong Kong China’s Ka Lee Wong.

She defeated Wong by yoko with a 4-0 golden score.

Earlier in the day, Ashmita defeated Vietnam’s Ngoc Chi Ha via ippon in the round of 16 before losing to finalist Abiba Abuzhakynova of Kazakhstan by ippon in the quarterfinals.

In judo, waza refers to a technique or movement used in the sport, while ippon is awarded for a decisive scoring action, including a throw in which the opponent lands on their back with considerable force and speed.
