Kumram Bheem Asifabad: A tribal man from the district was arrested for poaching a tiger through an electric snare he sep up neighbouring Maharashtra on December 25. A claw and tiger whiskers were recovered from him. Three more accused are absconding.
District Forest Officer S Shantharam said the accused, Portheti Kantharam, a resident of Digide village in Dahegaon mandal, was arrested on Saturday. Three more persons from this remote village are also suspected to be involved in the poaching of the tiger in Mosam forest beat in Aheri Taluq of Gadchiroli district.
The officer said that foresters from Maharashtra exhumed various parts of the decomposed carcass of the big cat following foul smell emanating from the are on December 30. They launched a probe into the poaching and arrested five persons from Maharashtra. The accused revealed that four persons of Dahegaon mandal too were involved in the offence.
Special teams of forest and police departments of Maharashtra and Telangana launched searches in the house of Kantharam and found the claw and whiskers. A search was launched to nab the remaining suspects. The poachers buried the body of the carnivore at the spot of the crime after removing the claws, whiskers and skull.
